The Challenge
Our customer, a global leader in the creation of flavours and fragrances, was managing essential oil residues and packaging waste through a high-cost, collection-heavy hazardous waste process.
We worked together to identify improvements in this process, making it more efficient and less expensive for the customer.
We added a Waste Operative to improve this service line by liaising between the site and the waste broker.
Axil solution
Working in partnership, Axil implemented a smarter hazardous waste strategy that delivered immediate improvements. This was achieved by halving waste collections by optimising the loads on each trailer and led to the following savings:
- More than £22,000 saved in transport costs by reducing hazardous collections from weekly to fortnightly.
- CO₂ emissions reduced through fewer vehicle movements: Weekly hazardous waste collections previously totalled 20,384 miles and 25.74 tonnes of CO₂ annually. This was reduced to fortnightly pickups, saving over 10,000 miles and 13 tonnes of CO₂ every year.
- C.392.3 tonnes of metal waste avoided annually by reusing empty drums and kegs instead of crushing and recycling, resulting in £28,000 in annual disposal savings.
- Cardboard reclassified as recyclable after analysis confirmed plastic linings didn’t contaminate the material, enabling baling, cost savings, and potential future rebates.
Non-hazardous waste savings
Upgraded Waste Containers
We have improved the waste area by replacing 33 wheelie bins with four larger, clearly labelled containers to improve recycling segregation.
Saving Costs
Removed unused bin, generating savings of more than £1,500 per annum.
Metal & Wood Optimisation
Optimised the collections of metal skips and ensured all wood is segregated for recycling. This generated savings of more than £2,000 per annum.
RORO Wood Savings
RORO designated for wood collections, generating savings of £2,100 per annum.
On-Site Baling
Placed a baling machine on-site to compress cardboard and soft plastic to generate rebates.
Specialist Recycling Bins
Introduced collection bins for crisp packets, empty toothpaste tubes and used PPE items. These are collected and recycled into new plastic products.
